Moon Phase Garden

Wild carrot (Queen Anne's lace)Poison hemlock & water hemlock — among the deadliest plants in North America.
Wild garlic / rampsLily of the valley and false hellebore — no onion smell, and toxic.
ElderberriesPokeweed: never eat the berries. Elder: cook ripe berries only; never eat stems, leaves or unripe berries.
Blue/black wild berriesDeadly nightshade and pokeberries.

Look-alike: scarlet pimpernel (toxic) — square stems, orange or blue flowers, no line of hairs. Chickweed has round stems with a single line of fine hairs.
Look-alike: young nightshade seedlings (toxic). Lamb's quarters has a white, mealy coating on its new leaves; nightshade does not.
Young shoots look like iris (toxic) — confirm last year's brown seed heads on the same stand before you pick.

1 · Ramps vs. Death Camas

✅ Safe — Ramps. Broad, smooth, flat leaves; a reddish base; smells of onion when crushed.
⛔ Avoid — Death camas. Narrow, grass-like leaves with a V-crease; a dark-sheathed bulb; no smell.

The tell: Crush a leaf — if there is no onion smell, do not eat it. Smell each leaf separately and wash your hands between — scent on your fingers can fool you. Also rule out false hellebore: pleated, ribbed leaves, no smell, and deadly.

2 · Watercress vs. Water Hemlock & Fool's Watercress

✅ Safe — Watercress. Rounded, smooth-edged oval leaflets on a hollow stem; small four-petaled white flowers in short spikes; grows in moving water.
⛔ Avoid — Water hemlock & fool's watercress. Carrot-family plants that grow in the same wet ground, with toothed leaflets and flat umbrella-shaped clusters of tiny white flowers (poison hemlock, a relative, is pictured). Water hemlock is among the deadliest plants in North America; fool's watercress grows right in among watercress beds.

The tell: Watercress has smooth-edged leaflets and four-petaled flowers. Toothed leaflets or umbrella-shaped flower clusters mean a carrot-family look-alike — water hemlock or fool's watercress. Back away.

3 · Yarrow vs. Poison Hemlock

✅ Safe — Yarrow. Soft, feathery thousand-leaf foliage on a solid, hairy stem; strongly aromatic.
⛔ Avoid — Poison hemlock. Coarser, carrot-like leaves on a smooth stem blotched with purple.

The tell: Hairy solid stem = yarrow. Smooth, purple-spotted stem = walk away.

4 · Comfrey vs. Foxglove (first-year rosette)

✅ The plant you want — Comfrey (topical use only — never eat). Hairy, untoothed leaves whose bases run down the stem, making it look winged.
⛔ Avoid — Foxglove. Finely-toothed, wrinkled leaves, each on its own distinct leaf-stalk.

The tell: A toothed edge and a clear leaf-stalk mean foxglove — a heart toxin. Avoid. Only use comfrey you planted yourself and have seen flower.

5 · Milkweed vs. Dogbane

✅ The plant you want — Common milkweed (cook before eating). Young shoots are thick and covered in fine hairs; broad, opposite leaves.
⛔ Avoid — Dogbane. Young shoots are thin, smooth, often reddish and hairless; the grown plant branches and has narrower leaves.

The tell: Young shoots: milkweed is thick and covered in fine hairs; dogbane is thin, smooth, often reddish and hairless. No hairs = don't eat it. Milky sap proves nothing — both have it.

6 · Boneset vs. White Snakeroot

✅ The plant you want — Boneset (not a food — liver-toxic alkaloids). Paired leaves fused around and pierced by the stem — it seems to run through one leaf.
⛔ Avoid — White snakeroot. Clearly stalked, heart-shaped, toothed leaves that are not fused to the stem.

The tell: Stem-through-the-leaf is boneset. Separate stalked leaves are snakeroot — the milk-sickness toxin.

7 · Purslane vs. Prostrate Spurge

✅ Safe — Purslane. Thick, fleshy, paddle-shaped leaves on a smooth reddish stem; no sap when snapped.
⛔ Avoid — Prostrate spurge. A flat mat of thin, small oval leaves on wiry stems; oozes milky white sap when broken.

The tell: Snap a stem — milky sap means spurge. Fleshy leaves and no sap means purslane.

8 · Wild Garlic vs. Autumn Crocus

✅ Safe — Wild garlic. Slender grassy leaves and a small papery bulb, with a strong onion/garlic smell.
⛔ Avoid — Autumn crocus. A rounded corm sprouting a leafless pink-purple flower; broad strap leaves; no smell.

The tell: No onion smell means do not eat it — autumn crocus colchicine has no antidote.

9 · Field vs. Marsh Horsetail

✅ Safe — Field horsetail. A jointed stem whose first branch segment is longer than the sheath beside it.
⛔ Avoid — Marsh horsetail. A similar stem, but the first branch segment is shorter than (or equal to) the sheath.

The tell: Compare that first branch segment to the sheath — shorter points to the toxic marsh species.
